But while this is often very true, it isn’t 100 percent accurate. In fact, did you know that tooth pain is just one symptom of an infection, and in some cases, you can still have one without feeling any pain at all? Here’s why even though you may not feel any discomfort, you still may need a root canal.

What is a Tooth Infection?

A tooth infection occurs when the inner material (known as the “pulp”) becomes infected. This can cause a great deal of pain, but in some cases, you may feel nothing out of the ordinary. Unfortunately, this type of illness can easily spread to other healthy teeth, so by ignoring it or hoping it will go away on its own you are putting the rest of your mouth at unnecessary risk. Thus, your dentist will likely recommend a root canal procedure to heal the infection and prevent it from spreading.

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a procedure designed to remove the infection from your tooth. To do this, your dentist will first open the tooth up and remove the infected pulp. Once it is cleared, it is then filled with a synthetic material that keeps the tooth strong and the infection at bay. It is then closed back up with a filling or a crown. Following the procedure, your tooth will be safe from the infection, so it won’t need to be extracted, and your neighboring teeth will be safe from any further risk. If you have experienced any pain before, it should clear up after your root canal, and if not, you can smile knowing your teeth are safe!

Other Signs of Tooth Infection

Tooth pain is just one indicator that your tooth may be infected. Other symptoms include:

An abscess

Darkened gums

Swollen gums

Gum sensitivity

Bumps on the gums

Sensitivity to hot and cold

A chipped or cracked tooth

If you notice any of these symptoms, reach out to your dentist as soon as possible for an urgent appointment. While they could be nothing, it’s better to be safe than put your teeth in jeopardy.

Remember, just because your tooth doesn’t hurt doesn’t mean that it’s safe to leave untreated. If you are experiencing a dental infection, it is imperative that you treat it as soon as possible to prevent tooth loss and the spread to other teeth.

About Dr. Franklin-Pitts

Dr. Donna Franklin-Pitts and her team welcome your entire family to Franklin Dental Center.
