But, even though the amount of radiation is very small, routine<\/em> dental X-rays are still typically\npostponed during pregnancy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in the event of a dental emergency, X-rays are\nwidely considered to not only be necessary, but also safe. In fact, both the\nAmerican Dental Association and the American College of Radiology agree that\ndental X-rays are safe during pregnancy, provided that the normal, standard\nprotective apron is used. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, it\u2019s important to remember that your oral\nhealth affects the rest of your body, including an unborn child. For example, a\ntoothache is often the result of an infection that can spread to other areas of\nthe body and become dangerous or even life-threatening if it\u2019s not\ntreated.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is It Still Important For Pregnant Women To Get Checkups and Cleanings?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Although routine X-rays are usually postponed, routine checkups\nand cleanings<\/a> are even more important than normal during pregnancy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers have found that inflamed gums (also called gingivitis\nor gum disease) increase the risk of pregnancy complications such as pre-term\nbirth or low birth weight. However, regular cleanings and good oral hygiene at\nhome will keep the gums healthy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, some insurance companies even cover additional\ncleanings during pregnancy, so be sure to check your plan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
