What Is Dental Bonding?

A woman getting a dental bonding procedureDental bonding is a quick, affordable procedure that uses tooth-colored filling material to mask minor cosmetic flaws (this is the same material that’s used to fill cavities on the back teeth). Bonding usually doesn’t require removing any of your existing tooth structure. Instead, the material is simply added to your enamel and shaped to look very natural. This means that local anesthesia isn’t typically required unless the tooth has an existing cavity that needs to be repaired.

Bonding has many other benefits as well, including being cost-effective, fast and involving little to no downtime. With good oral hygiene habits and regular checkups, it usually lasts an average of 5 to 10 years.

What Kind of Flaws Can Dental Bonding Correct?

Dental patient having a consultation about dental bondingAs a cosmetic dentist in Tyler, Dr. Franklin makes her recommendations based on what will give you the best final results. While she often recommends veneers or dental crowns for moderate or severe imperfections, dental bonding works beautifully for more minor flaws like:

  • Chips and cracks
  • Oddly-shaped teeth
  • Stubborn stains
  • Small gaps between the front teeth
  • Small or moderate-sized cavities on the front teeth

What Is the Dental Bonding Procedure Like?

With that said, you can always be numbed if you prefer. Otherwise, Dr. Franklin will begin by placing tooth-colored filling material directly onto your tooth. This will be perfectly matched to your existing shade to blend in seamlessly with your smile. In some cases, our patients choose to whiten beforehand to make their results look even better. From there, she’ll sculpt the material to cover any flaws, while still making it look natural. Then the resin will be hardened with a special “curing light” and polished to feel very smooth.

If you’re looking for a dentist in Tyler who provides beautiful cosmetic dentistry, call us today to schedule a consultation. We’ve used dental bonding to transform the smiles of countless patients, and we’d love to help you too!
